Dessert Places in San Diego

November 19, 2009

I’m sad. Why? Because all that’s left of this lovely box of Laduree macarons…

…is a box of Fruity Pebbles-looking crumbs :(

Actually, when we got home and opened the box of macarons, they were all crumbly and messy, most likely a result of the hustle and bustle of 24 hours of traveling.

I’m also sad because there is no place in San Diego that comes close to the luxurious French pastry shops of Paris. Yeah, we have Extraordinary Desserts, which is really delicious, but I want something different. Something super delicious. Something I can sink my Yelp teeth into.

I checked out Opera Patisserie in Sorrento Valley. The non-macaron desserts were really good. The macarons were eh. They were boxed up and I think they had been stored in a fridge.

I would give a thumbs up to Opera’s cakes. The macarons are another story. Not too thrilled about boxed up and cold macarons.

I decided to try another dessert place: Hogetsu Bakery. Actually, I’m lying. I didn’t make the trek down to Chula Vista bakery, but I did go to a market close to my office and bought some yummy manjū made by Hogetsu. I highly recommend it. If you’re a little far from the bakery, you can get some manjū at Nijiya Market in Kearny Mesa. I love red bean paste. I love mochi! Not too sweet—just the right amount of sugary goodness.

I’m going to continue to search for the perfect dessert place in San Diego. I’ve been to a ton (such as Babycakes, Sage French Cake, Stephanie’s Bakery and Chocolat) but I want something that’ll blow me away! Stay tuned for more sweet entries…
